From Vision To Action in Ensenada

On January 6, Pastors Alejandra and Jose will celebrate their 12th anniversary as pastors of Ministerio La Palmera. In the 12 years since, they’ve built a church by hand (or, hands)—literally—from a rocky, dry hillside to a growing congregation. It’s been a 12-year labor of love, and they walk us through the story and the building with laughter and gratitude.

A tour from Jose always has two parts—the reality of what is (or, most accurately, what they’ve done since our last visit) and the expanding vision of what they pray will come. They are the kind of leaders who think and dream three steps ahead of the rest of us.

In the months since our last visit, they’ve taken down the wall dividing the church’s classroom from the sanctuary – they had to! It was standing room only. The dividing wall now forms a temporary stage – without a concrete floor, their pulpit and instruments would get wet.

But they have new families, so they need a classroom! We walked to the back of the building to see a framed wall and roof covered with a tarp. Of course, children’s art was on the wall.

The dream: build a solid first-floor classroom so they can build a children’s/youth wing above.

I say “dream,” but they are already doing it. With the time they have and the money they have, they just keep moving onward.

Vision to action . Financial resources and the number of hands don’t determine “if” they act… just how fast they go.

Ben and I want to learn to lead as they do! And we want to help them build a bit faster and with a few more hands.

Goal 1: Before January 6, we want to dig drainage, lay a drainpipe, and pour the concrete floors in the sanctuary and the new kids’ classes. This will waterproof both areas before the rainy months of January and February, further impacting their wooden church building.

Goal 2: Build a full first-floor classroom. This involves framing, walls, electricity, windows, and two doors.
